What is BILDSTÖRUNG?

“Bildstörung” is the name of the Streettheatrefestival in Detmold, which took place for the first time in 1991 and is being hosted biannually by the city of Detmold since 1992 with the aim to make art and culture in public space accessible and available for everybody. “Bildstörung” literally means picture interference and is related to the intention of the festival to break with the common day-to-day routines and views, whatever they might be for each individual.

Due to its wide spectrum the festival attracts visitors, ensembles, event organizers from everywhere around Europe.
It covers locationtheatre, walk-acts, animation, parades, technically very simple and also very complex Open-Air productions.
There are productions in the field of visual as well as performing arts, architecture, installations, voicetheatre and dancetheatre as well as music-, figure- and masktheatre alongside cirque noveau are being taken into account amongst many more.

Detmold calls itself a culturecity and wants to establish and elaborate theatre in public space.

The KulturTeam of the City of Detmold is in charge of the conception, artistic management, organisation and execution of the festival.

When does the BILDSTÖRUNG take place?

What about tickets and accessibility?

Our aim is to offer all events open-air, for free and accessible for everyone.
However in some cases there are tickets being sold for the purpose of organizing a limited capacity of participants. Some events might not be accessible for everyone due to various reasons (mainly safety).

2022 tickets need to be purchased in advance for these two events/performances:

Johanne Bellinkx (NL) – “Reverse” This event is not barrier-free
Touki Delphin (NL) – “Firebird” This event is not barrier-free.

Tickets can be purchased in our webshop:

Is the BILDSTÖRUNG barrier-free?

We try to make all events of the BILDSTÖRUNG barrier-free. Unfortunately, this is not possible for some productions for safety reasons. This year, this restriction affects the productions “Reverse” by Johannes Bellinkx and “Firebird” by Touki Delphine.

Barrier-free public toilets are located in the Town Hall under the Town Hall stairs.
