Taarab by women from Zanzibar
Tausi Taarab Orchestra from Zanzibar breaks several taboos: It is the only all-female ensemble on Zanzibar and the women not only sing, but also play all the instruments, which was an absolute impossible in Zanzibar’s Muslim-dominated culture until about ten years ago.
In addition, the ensemble presents the classical taarab style, an elite male-dominated art form originally intended to lead to a state of ecstasy, bringing about a revolution in this very traditional genre. Taarab music is a mix of styles that reflects the different cultures of Zanzibar, it combines European and African instruments such as violin, accordion and drums with the Arabic kanoun.
This production is funded by the Kultursekretariat NRW in Gütersloh and the Ministry for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
